Currently ransomware is one of the most prolific and damaging of cyber-attacks in the world.  Cyber-criminals are very successful in attacking everyone from individuals, large corporations, hospitals and even government entities.  Once infected a desktop or entire network is disabled due to file encryption.  Some attacks even begin deleting files until a ransom has been paid. The longer you wait, the more damage is done.  A ransom is required by the attacker to provide a key to unencrypt the files.
